This page is a work horse.

A pool of mentions and sources of persons with the Tryon surname or descent that are not detailed enough to form a profile or determine whether they correspond to an existing profile.

We hope that in collecting and organizing them here we may be able to add profiles to the Tryon Name Study or attach them to their proper existing profiles.

We will organize this in the form of a list, e.g. name, known date, source of the information found.

We hope that making such a page a public resource would enable us and others to try to look these people up and get the necessary vital record(s) and source(s) at least to start profiles.

Abijah Tryon

He is living in what appears to be a boarding house in Hartford City, CT, for the 1850 census. He is listed as a machinist. The only other two Abijahs we know of anything close to that age are in other census records (one in Glastonbury CT, the other in Illinois). Since he is a machinist and the Abijah in Illinois is a blacksmith they may be the same and just counted twice while he is working away from home, however the birth years differ by 12 and the distance makes it less likely. He is thought to be Abijah H. Tryon (abt.1809-1864) and this record has been attached to him.

Abina Tryon (abt.1790-)

There is a Abina Curtiss in the Revolutionary War, enlisted 18 Aug 1777, of Southington, CT, Captain Kingsley's company "The Record of Connecticut Men in the Military and Naval Service During the War of the Revolution, 1775-1783, Johnston, Genealogical Publishing Com, 2009 - Connecticut - 779 pages". He appears in numerous records for the war in about 1777-9 but not elsewhere. It suggests that the relationship with Curtiss Tryon may be real since Curtiss is the maiden name of Curtiss Tryon's mother, Sarah Curtiss, born 1759. Abina Curtiss could be her brother and Sarah may have named a child after him.

Two families up is family of Jacob Yoder, 70, from Pennsylvania with Nancy Tryan, 12, living with them. Possible family of Susannah? There are Yoders from Berks County PA - is Abraham one of the Berks Tryons?

I'm pretty sure it is Troyer, not Tryon. This is how the written record is transcribed on ancestry and I find more records that fit for Abraham and Susan Troyer.

Alice Tryon

She's age 21, single. This fits 2 NY born Alice Tryon's that we have but could be another. She's boarding in PA. The Record for Amanda Tryon is also at this location. This appears to be related to College.

Tryon-1198 - we have her in Moira, NY in 1900 census.

But she could be double counted? She doesn't marry until 1902.

Andrew Tryon

Saphronia or Sophrona Covell married Andrew Tryon, 24 Aug 1834, in Glastonbury. I find no furthur information on him. Sophrona is found in 1850 living with her parents and has a 13 year old child John Tryon.

Ida A Tryon

Jacob Tryon, Philadelphia (1819 - 1829 approx)

There are a significant number of Jacob Tryons in Philadelphia from late 1700s onwards. Some are descendants of Jacob Tryon and some are documented on WikiTree. City Directories are available online for Philadelphia from 1785 onward and that is the source of the Jacob Tryons below [1].

Jacob A. Tryon, store, Beach nr Maiden 1823. In following years there is J. A. Tryon, store keeper and beginning in 1829 is looking glass merchant through 1836. In 1837 the name changes to Jacob A Tryon, business is the same, and the listing ends that year. This does not appear to be the same person as the merchant below in 1829-1833. This is possibly Jacob Aldrich who is know to be in Phildelphia during this period and also know to have moved to Michigan in 1838.

Marie de Tryon

Born about 1874 arrived in the port of Philadelphia, PA aboard the Illinois from Antwerp (Belgium) on 10 Mar 1895. Place of origin given as Rohrbach (Austria). She is listed as married, heading for Durant, Wisconsin, paid for her passage herself, would be staying with sister Mary Mainschover[?] in Durant. She was travelling with two other Marias.

I expect the location intended is Durand https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Durand,_Wisconsin

I have not found anything similar to that surname. I imagine it was either shortened to Maine or Maines, or was a name replaced in marriage, or perhaps is a recording of a blended Maine-Something.

I think this is her sister: Mattie Meyers-2267 The location is similar, parents have same names excepting the general variation in spelling Myers/Meyer. There is an age gap which makes this less likely. Death cert uses Myers, but son Hebron Meyers Buchanan uses the other spelling.

Hebron appears correct - but I am having trouble finding further records on him. I have three Hebron's connected on findagrave, a father and 2 children of same name but they die prior to known birth of Mary & Hebron's children's birth.

New York State Tryons

Jefferson, St. Lawrence and Oswego Counties Tryons

Three (or more) James Tryons. Trying to sort out many mentions of James Tryon in this vicinity in the early 1900s. Have identified James P. Tryon in a number of articles regarding marital and money troubles, but he died in 1910. Also identified James H. Tryon in a number of articles, but his marital history is still mysterious and he seems to have been involved with a married woman while himself still married. A third James Tryon was the Rev. James L. Tryon who was active in churches and revivals in the area in this period, but I have no idea how old he was, where he came from or where he went. His residence in this area of New York does not match up with any of the profiles for a James Tryon we currently have. Finally, there is a James D. or possibly James H. Tryon, in 1913 stated as formerly of Watertown who seems to have had a penchant for selling items not his own, and who may have been involved in an alleged assault on a Mrs. Thomas Kilborn that took place in March of 1914 in Watertown and for which he was sued by the woman's husband Thomas (of St. Lawrence County) for $5000 damages in 1915. (This sounds like the assault may not have involved violence, but more likely sexual advances.) He may or may not be the James H. Tryon, though there is strong evidence that that James would never have had to resort to buying furniture on credit, reselling it and then disappearing "out west" or into Canada for a time.

Tryons in Early New York City not yet identified with certainty

Benjamin Tryon mariner who appears in directories from 1799 to 1809, living in Harman street.

Henry Tryon appears only once, in 1812/13, and either is a banker or lives on Bancker.

He could be a remarried Josiah Tryon whose wife died in 1849. He seems to be the only one who shows up in Manhatten in this period. He would be about 42 at this time. Later records of him do not show a wife or child.

Maurice Tryon, porter, living at 298 W. 32nd in NYC in 1858/9.

Samuel Tryon appears in 1812/13 running a boarding house at 86 Liberty. NOTE: later a widow Jane, widow of William runs a boardinghouse on Liberty street (1835/6 at 30 Liberty; thereafter at 127 Liberty)

Weed Tryon, carpenter, living at 24 Pitt NYC 1855/6 (may be Smith W. Tryon Sr, whose mother's maiden name was Weed)

There is a notice in the Hartford Courant, 18 Mar 1823 and 8 Apr 1823, regarding Nancy Tryon, of Berlin, CT, who married Abel Tryon, of Middletown, CT 8 May 1814. He supposedly deserted her for parts unknown in Sept 1815. Additionally in "Beckwith notes. Sixth generation. Descendants of Marvin Beckwith", on Ancestry.com, Nancy Root, daughter of Stephen Root and Marcia Beckwith, married Abel Tryon of Middletown. The same is also found in "Root genealogical records, 1600-1870 : comprising the general history of the Root and Roots families in America, Part II. The Roote families (ancestry.com)".

This Abel Tryon could be Abel Tryon (bef.1792-) who we know nothing of beyond birth.

In Connecticut Town Death Records, pre-1870 (Barbour Collection), Brookfield Vital Records 1788-1852, page 91, we find Tryon, Anor, w. William, d. Dec. 28, 1823, and Tryon, Daniel, s. William, d. Oct. 2, 1823. These don't match with anyone we know of and are the only Tryons in Brookfleld, Fairfield Co., CT.

In the 1800 census of Berlin, there is a 26-45 year old Noah Tryon with wife of same age range and a child, a son <10. Noah Tryon is the only person we know of who fits this age range. Unfortunately he seems to already be in Ohio by 1799. There is also a seaman's protection certificate issued 19 Dec 1799 to 25 year old Noah Tryon of Glastonbury so there are potentially two Noah Tryons born in the early 1770s, one who is still there about 1800. Others who live in Berlin in 1800 are John Tryon and Capt. William Tryon. These two are first cousins and close in the census but far from Noah. John is the father of Noah Tryon so maybe Noah didn't move to Ohio as soon as thought.

In Connecticut, Church Record Abstracts, 1630-1920, Volume 069 Part 2 Middletown, p. 488-489, amoung the Tryons, there are entries for "Grace Ingersol, Harriott, W[illia]m Henry, Lucy Hall & Jehiel, chn. of [ ], bp. Sep. 4, 1828, v. 3 p. 22". I find no records for any of them. The closest we have is Jehiel Tryon born 1786 in Middletown and another Jehiel Tryon who could be the elder Jehiel's son and the Jehiel of this 1828 baptism. Could these all be the children of the elder Jehiel? In the 1810 census of Chatham, CT, he is 16-26 with a wife and no children. In the 1820 census of Chatham, CT, Jehiel is 26-45 with a wife of the same age range, with a son <10 and 4 daughters <10.

In the same record a William Henry Tryon is also baptised in 1834, the same day he died at age 2, suggesting the first may have died, a second born and named the same, and subsequently died as well.

Lucy Hall Tryon may be the Lucy H. Tryon who married Samuel J Bradford, 11 Jun 1848, in Middletown. Tryon died at the age of 2 years on 27 Aug 1900 of innanition (starvation) due to underlying congenital syphillis. (ref: Indiana, Death Certificates, 1899-2011; Year: 1899 - 1900; Roll: 18 (Ancestry.com). Sarah and Augusta appear together in the 1900 census (enumerated on 2 Jun 1900 living in the household of Robert and Josephine Gott, Sarah listed as daughter, Augusta as "grandson". Sarah's birth date is given as Mar 1881, Augusta's as Jun 1899. (NOTE: another death index record says the child was "August L. Tryon" aged 2.) A second, unnamed, female infant appears to have been born and died on the 5th August of 1900 due to inanition following a complicated labor. Again, the quality of the image of the death certificate is poor, the informant was A. J. Tryon, father's name Andrew J. (page then cut off in scan). The infant was buried in Highland Lawn Cemetery.

Martin's mother's name is given as Annie Tryon. Other records spell the surname Moench, including Martin's World War II draft registration document. The 1900, 1910 and 1920 censuses list the mother as Anna Moench and give her birthplace as Würtemberg, Germany. Possibly the birth record may have been recorded through a mis-hearing of a similar German name such as Thrian. However, Martin's death record of 1953 lists his mother as Anna Mount, father Gustav Moench. A number of related children appear buried in the same or nearby cemeteries, though the older ones were born in Germany: their father's name is Gustav or Gust Adolf Moench, mother's name Anna Karolina Irion. Tryon, Hiram, and unnamed wife and son. News item: tramp invaded the house at Millers, near Albany, OR and stole money, was apprehended but let go, dated 9 Aug 1895 Albany Democrat, page 3. This article may actually refer to Harmon Tryon b Nov 1827 in NY who in 1900 was living in Linn, Albany, OR with wife Mary, two daughters and a brother "Edwing" (Edwin?) b Aug 1845 in Missouri. Both daughters (Lou and Grace) were also born in MO. An H. Tryon appears in the 1905 Linn city directory. If this is indeed Hiram, then he is to be found as Tryon-3810 and has a brother Edmund Tryon-3416 of the right age.

Found in St Helens Mist (St Helens, Oregon) 08 Jun 1894, Fri Page 3 -- fairly obviously "Sock" is a nickname; for whom? An earlier notice has S. H. Tryon running for coroner. Worth quoting in full: 'The delegates were assisted somewhat for choice of a coroner by the audience suggesting that as "Doc" Tryon, in Portland, and "Soc" Tryon, at home, could cure disease by the laying on of hands, possibly he could raise the dead and save the county some funeral expenses, and the attention of voters is especially called to this unlooked for reform.' Same newspaper, publ. 16 Mar 1894, page 2. In the same period there is a notice of land puchase by S. H. Tryon; same newspaper 20 Sep 1895, Fri Page 2. Item in 12 Oct 1889 (same newspaper) page 3 notes that his mother lived in Astoria and S. H. had a sister named Mrs. A. A. Cleveland.

Jacob Tryon has death and interrment records for Monument Cemetery, Philadelphia. Interrment 27 Apr 1868. The records for Monument Cemetery have him, along with George W Tryon, in a plot owned by John and Elizabeth (Tryon) Reakirt. This is significant because George W was a prominent, wealthy person there, and president of the Monument Cemetery, who, in his will, states he has a brother Jacob G. Tryon. The only Jacob G. in the records died in 1850, not 1868. Were there two Jacob G's born in the 1780-1790s? Monument cemetery doesn't exist today - it was bulldozed to make a parking lot for Temple University. Many graves and monument were relocated but most ended up in a mass grave and the monuments are the rip-rap at the base of the Betsy Ross Bridge. However, the records show that both George W and Jacob's graves were relocated to the West Laurel Hill Cemetery where George and many other Tryon's who were relocated were found. There is no record of this Jacob there. We have no other information on this Jacob Tryon. He could have been an infant with no other records or adult who's records somehow escaped notice.

Her birth year would suggest mother. As she was 2nd wife to Peter Benner, she could have married a Tryon rather than have been born a Tryon.

Anna Maria Trion born 22 Mar 1830 baptized 25 July 1830, Schwaben Creek, Northumberland County. Parents Benjamin Trion and wife Anna Elisabeth. Found in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, Church and Town Records, 1669-2013 PA - Northumberland Rebuck Lutheran Evangelical Lutheran and Reformed Congregations (Ancestry.com)

Turbotvile, Northumberland Co., Trinity United Church church records:

• a Chrissie Treon is recorded as having been confirmed at the Trinity United Church on 19 Jan 1878 but is noted as deceased by April 1881.
• On the same page there is a William R. Treon (note says "erased" and he appears never to have attended what might have been confirmation classes);
• Emma C. Treon Emma C. Treon,
• Mary A. Treon (note says: "married to Jno? Keller") who is probably Mary Alice Treon who married George Keller,
• Dr. George W. Treon (note says: "Received on profession of faith 19 Jan 1878").
• Listed with them is Asher Treon.

It is probable that Chrissie Treon is Crissy Nickle Treon, wife of Dr. George W. Treon.

Dr. George Treon had a wife Annie I. Ellis and a son George Ellis Treon. I can find no direct evidence of Dr. George Treon, but he is mentioned on his wife's death certificate and her headstone states she was the "Wife of Dr. George Treon". Looking through newspapers, I have narrowed the time of his death down to between November 1890 (based on likely conception of his son George Ellis) and a year later, November 1891, when local newspapers advertise a public sale of his land, house, barn and outbuildings in Lewis township, Northumberland, Pennsylvania. Furthermore, Annie Treon's entry in the 1910 census says she was the mother of three children, two still living (one of whom was George Ellis Treon, who died in 1976.)

Joseph Trion, died prob Jan 1851 in Jackson Twp., Northumberland County. Letters of administration granted to Peter Schott (who was also mentioned in preceding entry granting letters of administration on the same day (15 Jan 1851) for the estate of Sarah [Sara] Gaugler Trion to Benjamin Trion, Michael Trion having renounced. The close juxtaposition of death places and dates suggest that Sara, widow of Frederick Trion, and Joseph Trion may have been mother and son, living in the same household, and both carried off by an infectious disease at about the same time. Joseph left an unnamed widow who renounced the right to act as administratrix.

I've separated out two counties, Leon and Harris, because there appears to be a cluster of Tryon families in them.

Bettie Doris Tryon died 14 Apr 1947 in Mitchell county, Texas.

Ed Tryon died 16 May 1946 in Galveston county, Texas.

Henry E. Tryon died 25 Apr 1948 in Bejar county, Texas.

Jerry Steven Tryon died 11 Jun 1955 in Neuces county, Texas

Mary Ann Tryon died 13 Oct 1954 in Houston county, Texas.

Nellie Tryon died 16 May 1949 in Houston county, Texas.

Richard D. Tryon died 24 Mar 1954 in El Paso county, Texas.

W. A. Tryon appears as a soldier in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He signed up on 19 July 1861 to W. B. Botts's Company of Texas Volunteers for the duration of the war. He then served with Co. A of the 5th Texas Infantry during September and October of 1861 but was discharged. Note says: "Final Statement Given." Discharge took place at Camp Bragg near Richmond. Note says: "Inability orders", whatever that means.

Louisa J. Tryon married to William A. Clarke. She was born (according to daughter's death certificate) in Houston, Texas; William Clarke's birthplace is listed as unknown. Daughter was Mrs. Julia Clarke Overcash b 27 May 1872 in Houston d 1945. Louisa appears on her own as the owner of 9 female slaves, one male slave, in the 1850 Slave Schedules for Houston, Harris, Texas. She also appears in the tax records of Harris county in 1851, as in possession of two properties. Tryon but the principle name is Thomas Harrison. He may have been an agent? for her -- see https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q2QG-V38T and look at original document. In another tax record she appears to hold land with three others: A. P. Thompson, J. E?. Thompson and John Ouffley. At the time she is listed as owning 14 negroes (these are definitely assigned to her, whereas the land appears to belong to all four). This is quite confusing but she may actually be the widow Louisa Jacqueline (Reynolds) Tryon, later married to John W. Lawrence. If so, she was the widow of Rev. William Milton Tryon (see Louisa Jacqueline Reynolds.

E. C. Tryon enlisted on 13 Mar 1862 in Leon County, Texas in Co. D, Gould's Battalion, TC[ something? Cavalry], CSA. Note on record says "R&F 82; 1 MR dated May 30-62 showing Co. after reorganization May 24-62".[1] E. C. Tryon also appears in the National Park Service search for soldiers: https://www.nps.gov/civilwar/search-soldiers.htm#q=Tryon&fq%5B%5D=Side%3A%22Confederacy%22&fq%5B%5D=State%3A%22Texas%22. The records on Fold3.com show E. C. Tryon to have been 25 years old at the time of his enlistment in 1862, giving a birth year of 1836/7. That person was also noted as "sick" at Camp Nelson (Texas?) in Nov.Dec. 1862, then sick in the hospital at Austin, Arkansas in Jan./Feb. 1863. No further records are found.
